Wiston Village and Wiston Wood  Wednesday 19th May 2021

To continue with the theme of shorter mid -week walks, to encourage people who might
like to join the Ramblers but are unsure of what to expect, this week’s 4-mile walk filled the
bill with quiet country lanes, fields and woodlands.
To make sure of the full experience there was the occasional mud and slight detour after
taking the wrong forestry trail. This is something that can happen when you survey the walk
in a clockwise direction then walk it anti clockwise.
After a short talk on the history of Wiston eleven walkers set out south, down the Conkland
Hill road to the road junction at Valley Farm. From here it was a short walk east to connect
with the footpath to Wood Barn then across the stream and uphill to the forestry track at
South Dairy Mountain.
A short coffee break was taken beside the track before continuing east through the
plantation.
It was at this point a slight detour took place on one of the many forestry tracks, once the
error was discovered it was a short back track to the main path and east again to the
dwellings at Midcounty.
From here it was north, downhill through the plantation to the stream and uphill through
Wiston Wood to the road at Woodlands. It was this section that provided us with the mud
and the occasional flooded gateway.
The final section from Woodlands was uphill again through lush pasture to the road at
Wiston.
Another Ramblers experience was encountered when we came across a field full of cows,
which is why we rarely have dogs on our walks. The cows were inquisitive but did not pose a
problem.
On reaching the road those that wished to made their way back to their cars while the rest
of us had lunch a Wiston Castle. The walk was completed by 1.30pm and even with the
detour was only 4.5 miles.
The weather was bright and sunny, thanks to all who took part and I’m sure we will be
seeing them all again soon.
