Laugharne to Llandawke . Thursday 29th July 2021

This walk started from the tidal car park in Laugharne and followed the river Taf, passing Dylan Thomas’s writing shed and the boat house, his home for several years. We continued through woodland passing a property with lovely gardens including a very productive vegetable garden, before climbing up and over to St Martins church where we stopped to see Dylan and his wife Caitlin’s grave marked by a plain white cross. We then went on towards Llandawke where we visited a ‘redundant’ church almost hidden in a little dell. St Odoceus’ church was saved by the Friends of Friendless Churches who are a charity that care for similar churches in England and Wales. As of April 2021 they look after 29 in Wales and several of them are in Pembrokeshire. After lunch we proceeded to Llansadwrnen passing the parish church before dropping down towards the Burrows and working our way back along Dylan Thomas’s famous Birthday Walk with outstanding views across the estuary to Pembrey, The Gower and beyond. We soon reached our cars and then enjoyed refreshments at a local tavern. Thanks to all who came and making it a memorable day.
