Freshwater East and Stackpole Quay  Sunday 2nd January 2022

New year and a record turnout.

This was the first walk of 2022 and the 40+ walkers who had signed up for the walk needed to be split into two groups to make it more manageable.

Group 1, leaving at 10am to take the slightly longer walk and our group leaving at 10.30 to take the shorter option of 9.5 miles.

The route was from Freshwater East along the coast path to Stackpole Quay returning inland via Stackpole church and Thrustle Mill to the start.

The weather report was not promising but it was dry as we set out from the car park.

The first half mile was the most challenging with a steep climb up a muddy slope to Trewent Point, usually not a problem but after heavy rains and much use over the holiday this was almost impassable, we were glad we were not going down the slippery slope.

The intermittent showers forecast had started by now and it was not the most pleasurable walk along the path to Stackpole Quay. Fortunately, by the time we reached the quay the weather had improved and we made use of the picnic tables for an early lunch.

After lunch, with the sun trying to make an appearance, we continued over the Eight Arch Bridge and along the lakeside to Cheriton Bottoms woods.

On reaching Stackpole Church we took a short break before continuing along back lanes and through fields to Thrustle Mill. From here it was about 2 miles across more fields and down the road back to Freshwater East.

Thanks to all the walkers who took part, sorry about the rain at the start and the mud but as we know these are sometimes part of the challenge. It also gives us a chance to try out our expensive wet weather clothing.

Walk leader.

PS Thanks to Helen who arranged the walk and led the other group.
