Walk-leader Training Day.

Due to the current demand for places on our walks it was decided to repeat the Walk leader training and map reading course we ran last summer in the hope it would encourage more people to lead walks.

Eight walkers took the opportunity to brush up their skills on a two mile walk around Treffgarne Gorge.

Starting at the layby beside Nant-y-coy Bridge there was a short talk outlining the walk leader’s duties when leading a walk and a quick orientation of the map before we headed up on to Treffgarne Mountain.

The various footpaths and Bridleways on the map were explained and discussed along with other mapping features.

On reaching the outcrop of Maiden Castle there was a short pause to explain and practice map orientation, grid references and using a compass.

From here it was across the open access land to Poll Carn (Lion Rock to locals) before crossing the busy A40 road at Weir Castle.

There were useful discussions and observations along the way and more map reading practice.

Once over the road the route was across the rail line, over the bridge on the Western Cleddau and uphill along a narrow forest path into the plantation.

The weather had been overcast with a cool breeze so lunch was taken in the shelter of the woods before proceeding to the viewing point at Little Treffgarne Rocks. From here it was a straightforward walk via Lower Danbarch and the river back to the start.

After a short debrief and the issue of leaflets, badges and key rings the participants made their way home without, I hope, getting lost.

Thanks to all who enthusiastically took part and Chris for his help.
