Narberth and Canaston Wood Ramble
January 2020 was the last time we walked this area not knowing then what was to befall the world in the coming months.
So, it was with a sense of relief that, hoping the worst of the Pandemic was over, fifteen walkers set out to retrace the route once again.
Starting from the Town Moor car park we followed the multiuser trail down hill to a kissing gate leading through the fields to the ford below East Atheston Farm.
Before reaching the ford, we took a leisurely coffee break beside the stream.
After the break the route was south along the narrow lane to re-join the multiuser trail that runs through Canaston Woods. The original route was narrow and very boggy in places but since the installation of the new trail, suitable for wheel chairs, push chairs, bicycles, horses and pedestrians, mud is no longer a problem.
On reaching the car park at Eagle Lodge we left the trail and followed the Bridleway that runs south east through the woods to Molleston Cross. About two thirds of the way along the bridleway we turned off into the fields and had our lunch at the site of an iron-age enclosure overlooking Narberth.
After lunch we continued through the fields to the derelict site of Mounton Chapel before entering the woods and connecting with the Knights’ Way. Here we turned east and continued along the wide path to the ford and a country road, following the road up the steep hill to a footpath leading down through the fields to Valley Farm. On reaching Valley Road it was a short walk along the road to the footpath that circles behind the sewerage works and a steep climb up hill to St. Andrew’s Church on the edge of Narberth.
From the church it was a Sunday afternoon stroll up the high street back to the car park before 3pm, which was when the parking tickets expired.
The weather was perfect, I have never seen that walk look so dry under foot and the walking shorts had been dug out from winter storage
For after walk refreshment we used the new Hub meeting place in the old school house.
Thanks to all who took part in the walk and for Vanessa for organising the walk although due to Covid she could not take part.
