AROUND St DAVIDS

With the threat of heavy rain forecast for the afternoon twelve walkers set out from Caefai Bay car park for a circular walk around the outskirts of St. Davids.

The direction was east along the cliff tops, with a strong onshore wind behind and excellent views of the St. David’s peninsular and St. Bride’s Bay in the distance. On reaching Caer Bwdy Bay the route was inland to cross the main Solva to St. David’s road then using paths that many of the group had not previously walked, crossing the main St. Davids to Fishguard road.

After crossing the busy road the path lead to the open moorland of Dowrog and Waun Fawr where local knowledge was useful in selecting which of the several possible paths would be the driest after the torrential rain of the previous day. On reaching the Waunfawr playing field some of the group made use of the exercise equipment that had been installed before following the road for a short distance on the outskirts of the town, sorry, City.

The route continued, via quiet footpaths and country lanes, around the edge of the city to the back entrance of the cathedral grounds where after circling around the main buildings, we emerged onto a country lane going south west to the dwelling at Nant-y-Felin.

The rain had held off and lunch was taken on the wall beside Nant-y- Felin under a darkening sky.

After lunch the walk continued through fields, along farm tracks and country lanes to the harbour at Porth Clais and re-joined the Coast path leading to St. Non’s. Here, due to coastal erosion, there is a short detour which visits St. Non’s Well and the chapel. On returning to the Coast Path it was a 20 minute walk back to the start point at Caefai Bay. The distance had been almost 8.5 miles, the paths mostly dry with very little mud, those who wished to took refreshments at The Bishops in the City centre.

Fortunately the forecast of rain did not materialise until we were on our way back home.
