St Justinians to Whitesands
It was a day of views, in the glorious sunshine, over 7.5 miles. 17 cars (22 walkers) from all over the county so the massive camping field was very useful for parking.
An initial climb of 50 feet up Carn Rhosson to the old Coastguard lookout brought the first photo opportunity of the day; a vista over the Bitches, Skomer Island and out to the South Bishop lighthouse. St. Davids head to the north and a vast swathe of Pembrokeshire to the south and east.
Then a gentle stroll towards Whitesands, on an inland route through Treleddyn Farm and then on to the coast path. There was no sign of the water buffalo that had been in a field on the Thursday recce.
Whitesands beach was busy with surfers and others, and the lifeguards were on duty. We then had a modest climb round the back of Carn Hen and on to the slopes of Carn Llidi where we stopped for lunch. Although a bit breezy it gave us splendid views of the rugged coast with Strumble lighthouse 12.6 miles away (26 miles on foot).
We then returned to Whitesands and walked the along the beach to pick up the coast path, with a short breakout session at Porthselau beach to admire the tranquillity of the rolling breakers. On then to the lifeboat station at St Justinians and a trifle beyond, returning to the cars via a national Trust permissive path. There are a number in the area and permissive bridleways which unfortunately are not recorded on the OS maps. Does the National Trust publish them anywhere?
Debrief with 12 in the Farmers Arms in St. Davids.
Walk leader and report George Allingham; photos various.
