Pembrokeshire

COAST, TOMBS and VIEWS, 9th Nov 2019

This walk, on a blustery showery day, started at Goodwick Parrog. For the first section we followed coast path, so along the front, over the footbridge, and huff-and-puff up the zig-zags to Harbour Village. Onward, and remembering to take the left branch at Pen Anglas we walked up and down and in and out to the cliffs above the deep bay of Aber Felin, which is a prime area to see seal pups in the season. From here the path up to Llanwnda is easier under- foot. Next, a loop around Pontiago, taking firstly a pleasant trackway to the south-west, then north over the shoulder of Y Garn, where a sheltered spot was found for lunch, and back to Llanwnda on another trackway. This time we took a short break to visit the little church and view the bible burnt by the French in 1797, now conserved and protected in a glass case. Then upwards and over Garnwnda, taking the steep (permissive) track up past the Neolithic burial chamber to join the footpath down to the lane, then on via the lane and tracks to Pen Rhiw farm. After a short diversion to see the field from where the first aeroplane flight to Ireland took off in 1912, we went north past Pen Rhiw burial chamber, and down to Cilau. Turning right, the path back to town encircles the hillside above the coast path and gives (in my opinion) much better views. We followed around above Harbour Village and then took the tarmac multi-use path towards Stop-and-Call until a steep path leads down to a lane and past some nice residences back into Goodwick.

This is an interesting area with lots of paths, and several variations, diversions, and short-cuts, are possible.
