AFON CYCH VALLEY WALK
Twenty three walkers set out from the Nag’s Head car park to explore some new paths that have been opened up by the PCC in the woodlands just south of Abercych.
On leaving the car park it was a steep uphill climb to the footpath running south above the road and river “Afon Cych”, which is the border between Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire.
The path leads down to the road, go right across the stone bridge to the road junction with a narrow country road going west to the car park for the lake and dam at Pont Newydd.
A short coffee break was taken overlooking the lake before heading south uphill through the plantation to the dwelling and road at Glan-rhyd-uchaf.
From here it was through fields and farm tracks to the village of Bwlchygroes.
After passing through the village the route was north across a field of very inquisitive and lively cattle to a track leading downhill to dwellings at Parc- Clement, where lunch was taken.
After lunch it was downhill again through woodland to Cwm-blaen-bwlan and across several footbridges that span the tributaries feeding into the Afon Dulas. From Cwm-blaen-bwlan the route continued uphill through fields and farm tracks passing above Ffynnonau Home Farm to Gelli-deg. The sun was shining and there were excellent views across the valley into Carmarthenshire.
From Gellig -deg it was a straightforward walk downhill through the plantation to the start point at the Nag’s Head.
The weather for the walk was mostly bright and sunny and considering the heavy rains of the previous week and the number of streams and rivers in the area the paths and bridleways were not as wet and muddy as expected.
There were no stiles to cross on this walk which helps when trying to maintain social distancing, ( contact details were taken from those on the walk).
We returned to the car park at the Nag’s Head for welcome refreshment at 3pm, after a walk of just over 8 miles.
Many thanks to the landlord for allowing us to use his car park on a busy bank holiday weekend.
