Lockdown helps in discovering local walks.

The introduction of Lockdown earlier this year encouraged people to explore nearby footpaths when looking for some exercise.

The Rambler’s walk on Sunday was a result of this.

Starting from the Commons car park in Pembroke the route was across Monkton Bridge to the Barrage opposite the Castle, as this was a History Trail, walkers were given a brief history of Pembroke Castle and William Marshal who was responsible for its layout.

After a short section on the Pembroke Coast Path the group took the steps down to the shoreline, and as the tide was low were able to walk beside the Pembroke River to Jacob’s Pill where a short coffee break was taken. From here it was inland through Pennar and along Military Road to Pennar Park.

After a short talk on the ‘oil tank fire’ of 1940, and just before Pennar Park the route was on paths around the edge of the golf course to Llanreath, then down hill to the Martello Tower at Fort Road, which was an ideal place for lunch in the sunshine.

After lunch it was along Fort Road, past the newly installed doors which at last gives a view of Pater Church (the oldest standing building in Pembroke dock) to the main entrance of the Dockyard.

After more historical detail it was via the Heritage Centre, on to Albion Square and uphill past the old police station to Prospect Place.

After a short walk along the road it was possible to connect with the footpath that runs above the park to the main road at Pembroke Dock Cricket Club, then down Imble lane to a footpath that leads on to the Coast Path below Cuckoo Wood.

From here it was a pleasant walk back to Pembroke via Rocky Park.

The walk was just under 8 miles, the weather was perfect and most walkers agreed that although the route was through an urbane area it was full of pleasant surprises and quiet paths with impressive views of town and countryside.
